Local Missions Team
Beth Barcus I could not deny God’s call on the church to care for the poor after discovering nearly 400 scriptures referencing what the church has termed “missions”. In my life God has used scriptures like- Matthew 25:31-46, James 1:27, Isaiah 58:6-12, Galatians 5:6, and Micah 6:8 to drive home the necessity of missional living. He specifically used Acts 1:8 to reveal that “mission” must begin at home (Jerusalem). So, over the past 13 years I’ve been blessed w/ opportunities to participate in various local “missions”. Paradoxically, I have received far more from the very individuals I have sought to serve than I could have ever given them. The most profound, yet simple truth that I’ve gained from my experience in missions is the realization that my acts of service are not simply kind deeds, rather they are acts of worship (Romans 12:1), an overflow of thanksgiving to God (II Corinthians 9:11-15). It’s not about me feeling good about doing something kind it’s about God receiving worship, thanksgiving, and glory.

I think that people tend to put mission work in a box and ship it off to some third world country. But missions is much more than serving under developed countries; it’s serving people in your own backyard. It’s bringing dinner to a sick neighbor or picking up someone’s kids because they can’t get off work in time. Missions is just plain serving others with love. Sometimes the opportunities are obvious, while others you have to be more attuned to the environment, but if you listen carefully, you’ll start seeing opportunities everywhere! I have found that when I am in rhythm with the Lord, those opportunities to serve others appear endless.

Yvette Meldrum After serving the local community for a number of years behind the scenes; I have recently discovered that serving along side others, getting my hands dirty and seeing the needs face to face has inspired me to encourage others to find that joy. I realized that I must be willing and able to hold a true dialogue with others. I must be willing to listen to others as well as being willing to be a true witness of the love, compassion, mercy and humility of Jesus Christ.
